White paper correlates quality lodging with on-the-job productivity,
health and safety
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS – June 16, 2014 – Target Logistics, a global provider of workforce housing and one of the largest operators of turnkey solutions in North America, today released a white paper titled “Reducing Alcohol and Substance Abuse: A Benefit of Workforce Housing in Oil, Gas, Mining and Construction Industries,” by Graham Chandler, Ph.D. It can be downloaded for free here.
“Alcohol and substance abuse have been estimated to cost the Canadian economy approximately C$24 billion per year in lost productivity and about 10 times that in the United States. Drinking on the job, working with hangovers, using more sick days and increased accident rates all contribute to this cost,” said Chandler. “Solutions to alcohol and substance abuse are addressed in this white paper. Quality workforce housing is a part of the solution as it has been shown to reduce accidents, absenteeism and sick days and to improve productivity and morale.”
Dr. Chandler is a freelance writer who specializes in the business and technological aspects of the oil, gas and mining industries. Alcohol and substance abuse problems vary across industries, but workers in remote areas seem to be particularly vulnerable. A 2009 study of the Canadian oil and gas industry by The Shepell·fgi Research Group showed geographical isolation, performance pressures and work schedules may contribute to the higher prevalence of alcohol- and substance-abuse issues in remote workplaces relative to the norm.
